Choose between one authentic early WW2 German manufactured K98 cleaning rod. We have several from a batch imported directly from captured WWII German K98 rifles that were decommissioned and scrapped for parts by the Norwegian Army. These are as original as you can get, and have never been reblued or retouched.
Each has the high quality workmanship and rounded edges (mid to late war ones have straight edges and rough mill marks), as well as the cut inside to hold the cleaning cloth. Standard 12 1/2 inch (32 cm) length will fit all Mauser 98k made during or after 1940. Made for a 40-42 dated rifle, although will also fit all K98s made after 1940 and also G/K43s. All are in very good + c ondition with threads intact. Pictured ones are representative of what you will get, bluing is original and 70-80% on average.
All early rods were serial numbered at the factory to match the rifle they were mounted on. Hello guys, sorry to be boring with these military rods, but a previous thread had no replies and I'm still wondering if someone can help. Well, I collect military.45s since 40 years.
I love a lot any G.I. Related item and I can tell that I have all known variations of the M4 cleaning rod. I mean 4 variations of the brass, unmarked, WWI, the bright, unfinished U.H.CO.
Between the Wars, the WWII O'Hare (various markings size) and USCB CO (these ones marked on the shaft) and all known postwar variations until the very last manufactured ones. In all more than 20 variations. My major questions are: does anyone help in finding which firms are behind the following manufacturers markings: E.T.CO., K, J.A.M., D.A.D., SWT, MFI-DAL? Does anyone know why the U.H.CO.s come sometimes bright, unfinished (mostly) and sometimes parkerized?
Was the parkerisation made at the firm or was made later at armourer's shop level? If you deal also with G.I. Stripping tools, Squad Cleaning Kits, oilers, spare parts cans, brushes, gages and so, I have a lot of them and a lot of questions to ask. Thanks a bunch for your help.
Thanks Johnny! Thanks a bunch for your reply and for the splendid picture. By the phosphate finish of the rod racks I guess this is a Climax made Squad Cleaning Kit. A nice WWII piece, not speaking of the ten mint U.H.CO.
Btw can you remember the markings on your rod taken from a 1999 dated wrapping? Yes, most of the M4 rods going around are post WWII ones. Looking at the date on the wrapped ones, the very last made should be the ones marked 2X867 1005-00-556-4102, made by G&S Machine, Waukon, Iowa (dates observed: early 90s) and the ones marked O1VS3 - 5564102, made by Otis (date observed 2003). We can only guess about the big bulk of post WWII made ones. Most are still to be identified. We know the obvious SA marked, the Y.H.M. (Yankee Hill Machine), but we don't know about E.T.CO.
(very finely made), K, J.A.M. (a lot made and widely seen in Vietnam supplies), D.A.D. Original, and Y.H.M. Remanufactured by D.A.D. (with YHM mark erased and doubled stock number, and this is another mistery: why D.A.D. Got YHM rods and remarked them?), the SWT, and MFI-DAL (uncorrectly reported even by Chuck Clawson books as MFI-DAP).
Anyhow it would be nice to uncover the manufacturers who are behind these marks. Thanks for your help. I just picked up one of the packaged rods and didn't open it, but the numbers on the package are: 1005-00-556-4102 CAGE 2X867 P/N 5564102 ROD, CLEANING, SMALL ARMS 1 EA SPO760-99-M-B421 A 07/99 The Climax box has the wooden insert, but steel rod holders. All parts of the box are stamped with the drawing number, including the wooden insert and rod holders. It is thought that the Climax boxes pre-date WWII, and Clawson dates the U.H.Co. Rods as being pre WWII. The period from mid 1930 to approximately the beginning of WWII was when Ordnance stamped just about everything with the drawing number.
As the pressures for production increased, the adding of the drawing numbers dropped. Thanks Johnny, These Climax kits are among my favourites. I have one, found mint in wrapping, and I love it with its mix of WWI style and new phospate finish parts style. Yes, it is amaizing how many stock numbers are inside! Among my recent findings there is another WWI style kit (blued, brass holders, wooden insert etc.) which has been refurbished (as were many of them) and coarsely painted dull black instead of the more usual O.D.
The strange thing is that I found it in sealed November 67 dated wrapping. It is strange enough that when many later variations were surely available, they still refurbished WWI Squad Cleaning Kits. Obviously the 1967 date just means 'when' it was repacked and not necessarily the time it was refurbished (I think much earlier).
To finish with these nice Squad Kits, Chuck Clawson tells us that the latest, post WWII, ones were thiner metal than the previous ones (we speak of the all metal type) and avoided of any mark, apart the US on the lid. Up to this day I never saw one of these ones, not even in picture. Thanks a lot Fausto.
Just found for sale on eBay these three U.H.CO. M4 rods with parkerized finish. Unless they are the very same pictured in this thread, it is interesting to note that they are marked on the very same side of the loop. Why don't start to think that U.H.CO.
Started his production with the well known bright unifinished ones and at one point turned to parkerize the rest of the production? After all the bright finish wasn't the best for rust etc.
Not to speak about the markings on the opposite side of the loop.
They went for 255.00.they would have went for more.
But.right now I have to much going on and didn't bid. There is a set in the white for 99.00 starting bid.Damn. It sucks to be short on $$$$$$$$$. In 40 years of collecting 1911 & 1911A1 related items, I have never seen a package like your one. I mean just RIA marked without other markings. I have several M4 rods still sealed in original packages, but all are profusely marked.
Most are by contracts with private firms, just one is marked Springfield Armory and dated 1965. By the way Springfield Armory was the only Government owned facility to make M4 rods, both in WWI (brass, unmarked) and, as far as I know, in post WWII (parkerized).
I would not open it. This way you will not know who made it nor if it is brass or steel, but once opened it will loose much of its value. In any case Rock Island Armory never manufactured M4 rods. The Armory packed (or repacked) many 1911 & 1911A1 ancillaries, like stripping tools etc.
But never manufactured them. A picture of your package would be very interesting. Thanks for posting. Thanks for posting these nice pictures. As previously said I have no reply to this style of package.
This is the very first time I see a Government wrapping so poorly marked. I have more than 200 M4 rods of any kind, covering nearly 25 variations of this tool, and I have 10 different kind of packages, running from 1962 (a repacking of a WWI brass rod made by Springfield Armory) to a 2003 dated, made by Otis Products Inc. (Cage 01VS3 and so marked).
All these packages are profusely marked with all sort of informations on the item inside. I can't imagine which rod could be inside your wrapping. In any case I wouldn't open it. If you want to add some rods to your.45s, they are easily found on eBay.
Wtb. Original Cleaning Rod For Machine
If you don't find them I can provide some good ones, I'm plenty of doubles. I add a picture of some samples of my collection. These are not covering all the variations I have, but are a quite complete selection.
